Kevin Barnes' multi-decade project helps the nebulous become transparent
When Kevin Barnes had his heart broken by the cryptically named 'of Montreal," he turned that heartbreak into the name of the band he started in 1996. Here we are, 20 years later, and of Montreal remain in the spotlight. With their new album, "Innocence Reaches," Barnes has returned to the one man songwriting he had favored in the past. Innocence Reaches is touched by contemporary electronica, indie pop, and EDM. For the first time in his career, Barnes tuned into now. “Forever I’ve been detached from current music,” he says. “I got into this bubble of only being in some other time period. I came up picking apart the Beach Boys, the Beatles, and symphonic pieces. But last year, I was hearing Jack Ü, Chairlift, Arca, and others, thinking about low end and sound collage. It was an extra layer to geek out on.
Innocence Reaches features darker moments to be sure—isolation, anger, indifference, and the feeling that, like a Truffaut film, madness lurks just outside the frame—but as Barnes explains, “Epiphany comes from breakdown. If you can stay open and vulnerable, the nebulous becomes transparent. That’s one of the magical aspects of writing from personal life.”
Birds of Chicago
Every note counts. No gold-dusting, no filler.
Birds of Chicago was born in 2012 when Nero began writing for his vocal star-muse,
Russell. Both were accomplished singer/songwriters with projects of their own, Nero with JT
and the Clouds and Russell with the acclaimed Canadian roots outfit Po’ Girl, but together
there was an unmistakable chemistry. Nero had found the perfect voice for his rock and roll
psalms. Russell moved from being a primary songwriter to an interpreter, and her
simmering restraint is deeply refreshing to a landscape scorched by post Voice/American
Idol vocal gymnastics and over-emoting.
On Real Midnight, Birds of Chicago alternate moody rock swagger with the ghostliest of soundscapes. Produced by Joe Henry, a man who’s expert blending of light and shadow is well known, the album is a melancholy - but never shoe gazing - suite, full of wayward, joyful, lonesome voices raised up against the night.
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith
Serene Synthesis Explorer
Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith's formative years were spent communing with nature on Orcas Island in the northwest region of Washington state, a place she describes as "one of the most magical and peaceful places I have ever been." Though she wouldn't begin experimenting with modular synthesis until many years later, her creative work continues to be infused with and inspired by the vitality and serenity of Orcas.
Smith left the island to attend Berklee College of Music, where she studied composition and sound engineering, initially focusing on her voice as her primary instrument, before switching to classical guitar and piano. She employed many of the skills she refined in college in her indie-folk band Ever Isles, but a fateful encounter with a neighbor who lent her a Buchla 100 synthesizer, had a profound effect on her. Mesmerized by the Buchla’s potential, she explains "I got so distracted and enamored with the process of making sounds with it that I abandoned the next Ever Isles album." Starting with rhythmic patterns and melodic pulses, she soon began sculpting lush and exciting worlds of sound.
A recent move to LA, touring with Animal Collective, and rave reviews have us fairly certain we are only just starting to hear from Kaitlyn. We look forward to seeing where she goes.
